Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — the Pakistani Taliban — has dramatically resurged since the Afghan Taliban takeover in 2021, which provided the TTP with a safe haven and morale boost. TTP attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Balochistan provinces have reached their highest level in a decade, targeting military checkposts, police stations, and civilian markets. Simultaneously, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) conducts a separate but intensifying insurgency in Balochistan targeting Chinese CPEC infrastructure workers and Pakistani security forces. Pakistan conducted cross-border airstrikes into Afghanistan in January 2026, killing civilians and triggering a Taliban diplomatic crisis. Pakistan's military is stretched between counter-insurgency, the India standoff on the eastern border, and internal political instability following Imran Khan's imprisonment.
